How Many Prescriptions Do You Take On The Daily?

The other day I was sitting in a patient room waiting for my doctor to see me for my annual exam and I overheard him saying to someone outside the room, “Costco has a six month supply of Nexium for $13.00!” He was recommending this person run to Costco and snatch it up.

As soon as I heard this, my palm went straight to my forehand, and my head started shaking no, no, no!

Why? Because if you need Nexium on a daily basis, it’s time to start looking at what you are eating that is causing your need for an acid blocker.

While some medication is necessary and life-saving, more times than not, medication is only prescribed to us to relieve our symptoms, not heal our bodies. It’s a temporary Band-Aid for our boo boo.   And if nothing changes in the diet or lifestyle, then the dosage amount increases over time just to keep the symptoms at bay.

A good doctor will prescribe medications only if necessary and ask you to change up your diet and lifestyle.

But too often, doctors are inundated with patients and only just write out those expensive, unnecessary prescriptions.

Don’t get me wrong, we need doctors, and at certain times we need medicine. They both can save your life if you are in critical condition.

Doctors did not go to school to learn the ins and outs of nutrition; they are board certified in medicine. Doctors will not spend hours helping you change your diet and lifestyle.

That’s why health coaches are so valuable these days; they help bridge the gap between you and your doctor.

I went back for my follow up visit with my doctor because I asked for a slew of tests to find out why I have been feeling so tired lately. The results of my tests showed my testosterone level was very low and my glucose was slightly higher than the normal range.

After going through all my tests, my doctor offered me Metformin, Testosterone Cream or Pellets, birth control to not have a period because they are “unnecessary” or surgery to not have a period.

I politely said no thank you to all, because…

1) I will do my best to increase my testosterone level naturally and will only do supplementation if necessary. I really do not like how I am feeling due to my hormones being out of balance, but I’ll save that for another blog.

2) There’s no reason for me to go on Metformin, although he feels due to my dad and brother having diabetes, I will eventually be on this medication; I do not agree.

3) While having a menstrual cycle is beyond annoying it does naturally help to keep women’s iron levels in check and from getting too high.

I know there are things in my nutrition I can tighten up easily and will do so. But the fact that with every symptom I have, he had a prescription for, really disturbed me.

I want you to know that unless you have a life-threatening illness or a rare genetic disease, you too can politely decline the pill pushing.

Upwards of 90% of doctors visits are due to poor nutrition and stress. If you are willing to change up your nutrition and learn some lifestyle ninja skills, then you will not need Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Acid Blocking, Thyroid, Heart Disease and NSAID (inflammation) medications or at least you won’t need them for too long.

The sad part is that so many people look to doctors as the end all be all and take every medication prescribed. Often these medications come with their own set of side effects that need additional medications to offset the side effects.

There’s a reason the health care system is a billion dollar industry. But you can make smarter choices, ones that benefit your health, not cover up your symptoms.
