Food Intolerance SUCKS!

Recently I was away visiting family and my best friend of thirty wonderful years.  We were in her kitchen about to make Hamburgers and I was blindsided by how difficult it can be when I show up for dinner.

I don’t really think about it because 99.9% of the time I am in control of what we are eating when dining out or what we are cooking in our kitchen.  It’s not often anyone else as far as friends, cooks for us.

But this weekend I was hit hard by some comments that made me stop and think what a pain it can be when someone who is intolerant to so many foods comes over for dinner.  But sometimes I feel others perceive me as just being “healthy” and choosing to eat this way and possibly making their lives difficult LOL!!

To set the record straight I do choose healthier foods 80% of the time and they are all foods that I can eat and have no issues with. But I am not afraid to eat pizza or pasta or a cookie and have wine as long as I can actually eat or drink it.  Meaning it’s gluten free and there are no ingredients that will affect me negatively.

I am gluten and lactose intolerant and am very sensitive to foods that are high in Fructose, Fructans, Polyols, Galacto-oligosaccharides and Oligosaccharides.  These are all sugars (short-chain carbohydrates) that are found in natural foods and for me, they do not digest well, they sit and ferment in the bowels causing major digestive issues.

So yep, I can be a pain in the ass to have over for dinner!!!

I will say though my love Randy has my back 100% and is always watching out for me. LOL, he knows first hand how NOT fun it is when my stomach is looking about 6 months pregnant and I am doubled over in pain.

The only reason I figured out all my digestive issues is because I was listening to a podcast. The person mentioned all the issues she had and was literally telling me my life story.  She mentioned that she follows the Low FODMAP diet.

I immediately looked up this Low FODMAP thing and low and behold there was my answer.  I started marking off all the foods that hated me.  It was like I finally had all the missing pieces to the puzzle!!

Now that I know how it feels to not constantly have gas and major bloat that causes my pants to get tighter and tighter as the day goes on, I work really hard at feeling good and avoid the foods that cause me pain.

But on occasion when I am not paying attention to labels, I’ll eat something that sends me straight to bed feeling horrible.  In that moment, I am reminded to be thankful for the 99% of the time I feel good.

A note to my friends and family, I am truly sorry for any inconvenience I have caused and will cause in the future but this is a real thing.  Not just a trying to be “healthy” fad.  I don’t enjoy it either and I really miss donuts and cinnamon rolls!!
